Fund Story:
Winston and Maxine Wallin established this scholarship fund in 2001 as a memorial to her parents, Max H. and Julia Moore Houghton. Mr. Houghton graduated with a B.S. degree from the University of Iowa where he played center on the varsity football team. He also earned an M.A. degree in education from the University of Minnesota. For more than thirty years, he was a teacher at Duluth Central High School, first as a coach of three sports, football, basketball, and track, and later as a teacher of social studies. Mrs. Houghton pursued artistic interests taking many courses through Duluth adult education programs. Because Mr. and Mrs. Houghton were committed to higher education for students from all backgrounds and realized the importance of financial assistance, Mr. and Mrs. Wallin felt that establishing a scholarship at Duluth Central High School was an appropriate memorial.
