Duluth Superior Area
Get ConnectedWe are voicing our support today to the Google Twin Ports Fiber Initiative because we value this regional, economic effort to bring high speed Internet, video and voice to the region. At this time, we encourage you to do the same. Google is planning to build, and test an ultra-high speed broadband network in a small number of trial locations across the country. While we recognize the extreme competition for this trial, we also recognize the incredible assets this community has that would benefit Google. The cross-disciplinary group of leaders steering this Initiative is just one example of visionary leadership, and the strong supportive entrepreneurial environment that makes up this region’s creative economy. Where else in the world, would a city’s mayor plunge into the arctic temperatures of Lake Superior in February to make this case? Less than two weeks into this Initiative, we’ve watched dozens of individuals come together in different leadership roles with thousands more pledging their support through a variety of social media tools, such as Facebook. While much work remains to be done, the momentum behind this project is exciting. Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer once said, “The number one benefit of information technology is that it empowers people to do what they want to do. It lets people be creative. It lets people be productive. It lets people learn things they didn’t think they could learn before, and so in a sense it is all about potential.” If successful, the potential economic benefits of this initiative for this region are being compared to towns that first received the railroad, electricity or Interstate highways. Information infrastructure is the latest final frontier. As regional community stewards, we applaud the volunteer collaboration already underway. It is a true demonstration of the high levels of civic engagement that exists in this region. Now, we encourage you to showcase how committed this community is by doing your part to bring Google Fiber to the Twin Ports. Join the Facebook page.
